LAUNCHING PAD DRIVE-IN
If you've been thinking to yourself, "Geez, there just aren't enough giant rocket man figures by the side of the road anymore," boy, do we have the place for you! The 28-foot-tall Gemini Giant, who donned a space helmet and innovative short-sleeve space suit back in 1965, is hard to miss as you motor down Wilmington's main drag.
• 810 E Baltimore St, Wilmington, IL. ' (815) 476-6535.

From Wilmington to Braidwood, Illinois (6 miles)

From Wilmington to Dwight, Illinois (18 miles)

From Dwight to Odell, Illinois  (10 miles)
(Historic Odell Standard Oil Gasoline Station)

STANDARD OIL STATION
The Mother Road is riddled with old filling stations, but you'll be hard-pressed to find one in finer shape than this 1932 masterpiece. Locals have lovingly restored the old station, which no longer pumps gas but touts a nifty gift shop inside.  • Near south edge of Odell, IL. From 1-55, take exit 209; turn right at second stop sign onto Route 66. • (815) 998-2133.

OLD LOG CABIN RESTAURANT   (13 miles south of Odell)
When a new alignment took Route 66 from this homey cafe's front door and rerouted it out back, the owners simply jacked up the building and spun it around so it faced the road again. Inside, the food is better than average and the homemade peach pie is so good it might just make your head spin. • On Pontiac Rd (Route 66) and N Aurora St at the north edge of town, Pontiac, IL. (815) 842-2908.

MEMORY LANE
Lace up your walking shoes and check out life in the past lane along this slice of Mother Road, built in 1926. No vehicles are allowed, but you'll enjoy this amble through the woods, dotted with classic billboards. While you're at it, check out the nearby Towanda Geographic Journey Linear Parkway (say that fast three times), another stretch of old road that offers a nostalgic stroll.  • From 1-55, take exit 178 and drive 3/4 mile east to Old Route 66 and turn left; 1 mile north of downtown Lexington, IL.

TOWANDA PARKWAY
• Along Old Route 66 in Towanda, IL, 4 miles south of Lexington.

From Odell to Bloomington, Illinois  (49 miles)

From Bloomington to Funks Grove, Illinois (12 miles)

FUNKS MAPLE SIRUP
The Funk family has been making maple "sirup" here since 1824. Watch for the sign along the road, turn up the shady driveway, and step inside the small gift shop/sap house for a sample of what is quite possibly the most heavenly substance known to mankind. One taste and you'll be in sweet-tooth nirvana.
• 4 miles north of McLean; 5257 Old Route 66, Funks Grove, IL.  • (309) 874-3360.

From Funks Grove to McLean, Illinois (5 miles)

DIXIE TRAVEL PLAZA
Yes, it's a truck stop, but this joint is also a Route 66 institution that's almost as old as the Mother Road itself. Inside, you'll find assorted trinkets and road necessities, including a Route 66 Hall of Fame spotlighting the people and places that have made the road what it is today. • From 1-55, take exit 145 in McLean, IL.
(309) 874-2323.

From McLean to Lincoln, Illinois (16 miles)

ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL MUSEUM
One of the most compelling museums you'll ever visit is this high-tech, interactive complex, a poignant tribute to our 16th president and his fight to save a nation. A few blocks away at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site is the only house that Honest Abe ever owned. The two-story abode and surrounding neighborhood look much as they did when he left for Washington, D.C., in 1861.

COZY DOG DRIVE IN
The historically minded may gravitate toward Abraham Lincoln's museum and home, but the real "history" in Springfield is found at this nondescript suburban eatery where proprietor Ed Waldmire is said to have perfected the greatest road food of them ail-the humble corn dog-back in 1949.  • 2935 S 6th St, Springfield, IL.

STANTON, MISSOURI
It's just a dot on the map, but the tiny town of Stanton is a veritable gold mine of good, clean touristy fun. Meramec Caverns, once advertised on bumper stickers and barn sides all along Route 66, is the best-known attraction and a cool respite on a sweltering summer's day. But as long as you're in the neighborhood, the Riverside Reptile Ranch makes a funky stop that is as fascinating as it is, well, pungent. The Jesse James Wax Museum (where the owner will clue you in to the real story of how the local outlaw finally met his maker) and the Antique Toy Museum are also worth a look.

CARTHAGE, MISSOURI
Picture a traditional town square, complete with folksy shops, friendly cafes and neighbors visiting with neighbors on the sidewalk, and you have a pretty good idea of the attraction here. It's worth a detour if for no other reason than to admire the stately Romanesque Revival architecture of the 1895 Jasper County Courthouse. • Enter Carthage on Oak St (Old Hwy 66), travel south on Garrison (Alt US 71) 2 blocks, then east on 4th St to the courthouse.

Old pack rats may die, but in Howard Litch's case, a lifetime's accumulation stuck around for future generations to gawk at and enjoy in this fine museum in Litch's hometown. Perhaps there's something in the water out here that gives folks their decidedly pointed sense of humor. If so, Will Rogers must have gulped down more than his fair share at his boyhood home located 12 miles down the road from this grand hilltop museum. Inside, 12 galleries are filled with Western art and artifacts, show biz memorabilia and film clips that tell tales of his wide-ranging exploits as a trick roper, vaudeville performer, newspaper columnist and movie star.

DEVIL'S ROPE MUSEUM
If barbed wire (aka "the devil's rope") seems like an unlikely excuse for a museum, perhaps you've never stopped to consider its infinite varieties or the central role it played in taming the wide-open American West. A visit here will change all that. While you're at it, don't miss a walk through the adjacent Route 66 Museum, with its fine collection of Mother Road memorabilia.  • From 1-40, take exit 141 heading east on Old Route 66; 100 Kingsley St, McLean, TX.  • (806) 779-2225
